  • Sudarshan Chakravorty

    SUDARSHAN CHAKRAVORTY

    Artistic Director and Choreographer

    Sudarshan Chakravorty is trained in Bharat Natyam (Guru Bandana Dasgupta), Kathakali(Guru Govindan Kutty) and Thang ta , modern dance and jazz by France-based Nana Gleason, mind-body centering , Release Technique and other physical wisdom from various teachers in Europe and USA. Pioneer of a dynamic experimental form resulting from individual and ensemble mind-body improvisations, his innovative form raises sensitive contemporary issues. Sudarshan has led the troupe as director-choreographer to performances in India and abroad. Director of INTERFACE, a writer, workshop leader and collaborator he has worked as choreographer in the fields of fashion, film and television. He has been awarded by Oniel De Fellowship by Kalabharati, Canada in 2005 and Shyamal Sen Smriti Purashkar by Swapnasandhani in Kolkata in 2008. Sudarshan nurtures Sapphire as an academy of young ideas, growth and experimentation giving birth to performers, productions and art events creating a whole new renaissance for the arts in India.

  • Paramita Saha

    PARAMITA SAHA

    Paramita Saha is a 1st class postgraduate in English literature. Trained in contemporary dance by Sudarshan Chakravorty at Sapphire, also trained in modern dance and jazz from France-based Nana Gleason, dance and Movement Therapy under Janet Kaylo and Laurence Higgens from Laban Center, London,and body narrative with Alexzandra Barrer USA she has worked closely on improvisation work residencies with text-body work with Michel Casanovas (Switzerland), Christopher Lechner (Germany). Performing as the lead female dancer from 1999 and leading the company as co-director since 2002 her role in the group includes handling conceptualization, improvisation training and mind body conditioning for school and repertory dancers, documentation, management, copy writing, costume design, . With her expertise in event concept and marketing, branding, lifestyle management, marketing strategy and brand communication she also runs India’s only arts management company Arts Forward promoting novel arts ideas and concepts and has traveled to British Dance Platform 2012 and International Exposure israel 2012. She Participated in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2013 and Adelaide Fringe Festival 2014. Paramita has received the Bharat Nirman Award for Dance in 2007.

  • Dibyendu Nath

    Dibyendu Nath

    Senior Repertory Member, Sapphire Creations, Kolkata

    Dibyendu has been part of Sapphire for the last 16 years. Born and brought up in remote Burdwan, Dibyendu is now an established artiste in Kolkata. His athletic frame and open mind has a natural strength and takes to contemporary movements and ideas as a fish takes to water. Music, chalk sculpture, caricature, and magic are among his versatile talents, and he is also a computer graphics and film and sound editing expert. Besides being trained in the martial arts of Bengal, Dibyendu is trained in contemporary dance and jazz from Nana Gleason, has been part of mind-body training residencies with artistes from Europe and Americas, in Thang ta, the martial art of Manipur from Ranjeet Chingtham. He is adept in improvisory techniques and specializes in rope malkhamb, an adaptation of aerial ballet. He has travelled and performed with the company and represented the company at various prestigious forums across India, Australia, Spain, Vienna, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Singapore, Thailand among others. He is working as dancer, theatre and television actor for various productions at present.

  • Koushik Das

    Koushik Das

    Senior Repertory Member, Sapphire Creations, Kolkata

    Koushik haa been learning dance from the tender age of six and have been taking lessons in Kathak from the celebrated Guru Asimbandhu Bhattacharya in Kolkata and have been awarded the Junior National Scholarship by the Govt. Of India. He has been taking training in Contemporary dance from Sudarshan Chakarvorty of Sapphire Creations and has been part of the repertory for the past seven years. Trained in Improvisation technique and text-body work by Christopher Lechner and Michel Casanovas (Switzerland) as part of Sapphire International Chreographers’ Residency Program. Trained in contemporary dance by Roger Sinha( Canada) as part of Sapphire International Choreographers’ Residency Program. Trained in contemporary dance by Daniel Galaska( USA) as part of Sapphire International Choreographers’ Residency Program. Koushik has been one of two Sapphire dancers to be part of Sapphire’s Indo-Israel production Holi choreographed by Israeli Choreographer Idan Cohen and performed across India. Koushik also has the experience to take workshops, classes and demonstrations in dance for children and young persons in school , colleges and corporates including La Martiniere for Boys, Birla High School for Boys, South Point School and so on both independently and assisting Sudarshan Chakravorty. He has performed across India and Poland, USA and Bangladesh.

  • Ankita Dutta Gupta

    Ankita Dutta Gupta

    Senior Repertory Member, Sapphire Creations, Kolkata

    Ankita has been learning dance from the tender age of eight and have been taking lessons in Odissi in Kolkata and in Contemporary dance from Sudarshan Chakarvorty of Sapphire Creations and has been part of the repertory for the past six years. Trained in Improvisation technique and text-body work by Christopher Lechner and Michel Casanovas (Switzerland) as part of Sapphire International Chreographers’ Residency Program. Trained in contemporary dance by Roger Sinha( Canada) as part of Sapphire International Choreographers’ Residency Program. Trained in contemporary dance by Daniel Galaska( USA) as part of Sapphire International Choreographers’ Residency Program. Ankita has been one of two Sapphire dancers to be part of Sapphire’s Indo-Israel production Holi choreographed by Israeli Choreographer Idan Cohen and performed across India. She has performed across India, Thailand, USA and Bangladesh. Ankita has developed a solo Emotica at The Quarterly Arts Series which she has presented at various forums across India. Ankita has also played an active role in the festival management of INTERFACE for 3 editions 2008 to 2012.

  • Babua Das

    Pintu Das

    Senior Repertory Member, Sapphire Creations, Kolkata

    Pintu has been learning dance from the age of seventeen in various street forms and cinematic dance forms of India. Later he did Bachelors of Music, with major in Bharat Natyam from the Rabindrabharati University in Kolkata. He has been training in Contemporary dance from Sudarshan Chakarvorty of Sapphire Creations and has been part of the repertory for the past three years. Trained in Improvisation technique by Michel Casanovas (Switzerland) as part of Sapphire International Chreographers’ Residency Program. Trained in contemporary dance by Daniel Galaska (USA) as part of Sapphire International Choreographers’ Residency Program. He has performed across India, USA and Bangladesh. He is an expert performer as well as teacher and has been instructor with Sapphire School Section and is now professionally attached as teacher of dance with many known dance institutions in Kolkata. Part of the trio which was cast in Aspiration created in Quarterly Arts Series and performed across venues in India with this work. Pintu takes care of properties and production support for the company.

  • Rima Halder

    Rima Halder

    Rima has been learning dance from a tender age and has been learning various traditional forms like Bharat Natyam and Odissi as well as folk dances. She has been with Sapphire with last two years and is an expert dancer and performer who has done several stage and television shows with Sapphire notably Tribute to President of India by State of West Bengal as well as Closing ceremony of Kolkata Film Festival 2011 amongst other corporate and cultural events and festivals. She is also professionally attached as teacher of dance with many known dance institutions in Kolkata.

  • Prosenjit Dutta

    Prosenjit Dutta

    Prosenjit has been dancing for the last 7 years. He first trained in Chhau, Ballet for 2 years. He then trained under Susmita Chakraborty in Kathak at Padatik for 2 years. For a long period of 5 years he was an instructor at Padatik and shared his skills with young dancers. He has been with Sapphire as a trainee for a year and has now joined the Sapphire Company and has already completed a good number of shows with Sapphire with participation in Quarterly Series with his solo work and choreographies. He also id training under Michel Casanovas from France in Release Technique as part of International Choreographer’s Residency in Sapphire (INCRES).

  • Manju Roy Dutta

    Manju Roy Dutta

    Manju has been dancing for the last 7 years. She first trained in Chhau, Ballet for 2 years. She then trained under Susmita Chakraborty in Kathak at Padatik for 2 years. For a long period of 5 years she was an instructor at Padatik and shared his skills with young dancers. She has been with Sapphire as a trainee for a year and has now joined the Sapphire Company and has already completed a good number of shows with Sapphire. Manju is also trained in Zumba and Pilates and offers classes in both to children and adults. She also trained under Michel Casanovas from France in Release Technique and Floor work as part of International Choreographer’s Residency in Sapphire (INCRES)
