This will consist of a planned content and class modules. It will have an elaborate explanation of movement with its reference to technique, style and form in some specific choreographic phrases. Therefore the course is a good trigger for students who want a new orientation for their body and mind giving a sense of new aesthetics & idiom of contemporary dance with a balance of technique and form.

Sapphire creations dance company is my another home. I am a part of sapphire since 2011. Hmmm…..
What to start with? Am out of words…. Was a classical dancer since childhood, learned Bharatnatyam and Odissi and then suddenly when I was around 14-15 my parents took me to Sudarshan Da. He asked me to perform a number that I could so performed a Katthak number (Dhai shaam rok lei…. from Devdas). Was not very confident about how he would like, but I guess with his reaction then, he was overwhelmed.
Sapphire has been my second family since the day Sudarshan Da asked me join him. It seemed to me that I was already on Cloud nine. I learnt a lot. Never knew we can see “Dance” in a different way. It was Sudarshan Da’s magic that I learnt only a little part of the ocean. He grilled me to the perfection by every possible way.
I am thankful to Sudarshan Da that I was the first batch to perform Rituranga. It was tough and we practiced it to the T. But to satisfy Sudarshan Da, woooo it was really tough.
Peices like Garden of Maya, Extacy etc. etc. was the first ones I learnt. Thank you Sudarshan Da and Sapphire for being in my life and bring that dancer out of me which I was once. In my heart I will be a dancer forever. It was always Sudarshan Da’s voice that used to make me scare sometime….

Dance was always my love and still today my feet gets bobbling with any beat….. But in Sapphire I got my dreams fulfilled. Sudarshan Chakraborty the mentor id known to me when i was only 5 years. First my mother and then my elder sister and then it was me who were totally in pervasive with Sapphire. Sapphire was my love and will be. Sudarshan da is more of my bro than a teacher. He used to scold me and me also so many times promised him to never go back to Sapphire but next day of practice i used ti be their. So Sapphire is love….. Nobody can take its place atleast for me.
Sapphire gave me many opportunities as a student and helped me grow. I really think Sapphire as an academy plays an important role in the Contemporary dance scenario in Eastern India.

Our Teachers
SUDARSHAN CHAKRAVORTY
Pioneer of a dynamic experimental form resulting from individual and ensemble mind-body improvisations, Sudarshan’s innovative idiom raises sensitive contemporary issues. Sudarshan has led the troupe as director-choreographer to performances in India and abroad. Director of INTERFACE, a writer, workshop leader and collaborator he has extensively worked as choreographer in the fields of fashion, film, theatre and television. He has been awarded by Oniel De Fellowship by Kalabharati, Canada in 2005 and Shyamal Sen Smriti Purashkar by Swapnasandhani in Kolkata in 2008. He also received the Stagecraft Awards for Best Choreography in consecutive years 2017 and 2018. Sudarshan nurtures Sapphire as an academy of young ideas, growth and experimentation giving birth to performers, productions and art events creating a whole new renaissance for the arts in India.
ANKITA DUTTAGUPTA
Ankita Duttagupta has been trained in Odissi from a tender age of 5years and has been under the guidance of Guru Giridhari Nayak and Guru Swapnokalpa Roychoudhury Dasgupta for nine years . After that she started pursuing Contemporary Dance from Sapphire Creations Dance Company under Sudarshan Chakravorty and has been in the company for 14years now as a senior repertoire member.
Through her journey she trained with various visiting international and national choreographers in various techniques and choreographic method . She has been a dancer , instructor and a choreographer with Sapphire and has performed in several prestigious festivals and reputed platforms both nationally and internationally. She has been exploring herself as a solo performer and has been able to showcase her work as well as been invited in festivals like Prayana Festival organised by Attakalari , Emerging Artist Performance by Kolkata Centre for Creativity in association with Pickle Factory India and many more .
SYLVESTER MARDI
Sylvester Mardi is a performing artist and movement researcher based out of
Kolkata. He has done his Diploma in Movement Arts and Mixed Media from
Attakkalari Centre for Movement Arts, 2009-10. After which he became a part of the Attakkalari repertoire company for 8+ years. He has trained in bharatanatyam, kalaripayattu, ballet and contemporary. And has spent considerable time practicing yoga. During his many years at this esteem institute, he has worked as a performer, instructor, teacher and choreographer on many occasions. He has been a part of many of Attakkalari’s productions which has toured nationally and internationally. He has also collaborated with international choreographers from Australia, UK, Spain, Germany and Switzerland. To him, dance has always been a mode of self expression, and hence he is always in constant search of self expression in others. Currently Sylvester is in collaboration with Sapphire Dance Academy, Kolkata, where he continues to practice and explore the boundaries of physical movement and expression.
