INTERFACE, the International Festival of Alternative and Contemporary Expressions, the first ever international arts festival of Eastern India and only the third of the country.Seem as they may as disparate units the arts are variously shaped to fit into each other to create a meaningful cumulative experience. Sapphire attempts to create such a common yet non-mainstream platform where the arts can interact and bring to us expressions of another kind. Every two years, Sapphire throws open to the art lovers of eastern India and Kolkata in particular, this movement to bring home the tremendous and turbulent experimentation that recreates every human experience in myriad artistic forms all over the world.INTERFACE is Eastern India’s first and only international platform for contemporary expressions in the alternative arts. The festival is a major event in the cultural calendar of Kolkata covering various artistic disciplines focussing mostly on dance with a wide variety of events including outdoor events, seminars and workshops. The arts for a period of five odd days come alive to a frenzied process of exchange, learning and interaction between forms, genres, people and cultures. In an instant sensibilities and sensitivities are united, the world is bonded in art and in the love of it. We have been fortunate to host renowned artists from Ukraine, Canada, France, Germany, Switzerland, Japan, Hong Kong, Poland, Malaysia, Singapore, Israel, Taiwan among others.

Amongst Sapphire’s initiatives to spread the word of contemporary dance is this special event series meant to present young artistes from various artistic disciplines with their new endeavours, recognizing them while also celebrating established artistes, scholars, media persons and activists. The venues for this initiative are also meant to open up new non-proscenium art spaces and encourage more and more audiences to come and indulge in art; from cafes, bookshops to art galleries, cultural centers and corporate boardrooms, the choices are myriad. Sapphire believes that it has a responsibility towards the fostering of contemporary arts in the East and the country as a whole and also understands that unless artistes support artistes there can be no awakening in our social and political systems to support and encourage art. The Series has now been running for 38 quarters from 2010 and has presented works by Sapphire and non-Sapphire artistes, collaborations and installations.
